Satisfying the ever increasing energy demand in a sustainable way, while avoiding further buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is one of the biggest challenges of the humankind today. Conversion of biomass into fuels and integration of anaerobic digestion into the treatment of various waste products is an excellent way to mineralize organic compounds meanwhile gaining energy rich biogas. However, most of the biogas plants worldwide operate at well below their optimal performance. Better understanding of the microbiology behind the biogas processes may provide important information for their improvements.
