India – 5,000 tonnes of plastic waste generated daily

India is said to generates 5,000 tonnes of plastic waste each day, while a uniform law for the use of bio-degradable plastics is not yet under consideration of the government.



NewKerala.com reports that information provided by the Indian Centre for Plastics in the Environment shows about 60 per cent of India‘‘s plastic production is recycled annually, Environment and Forests Minister Namo Narain Meena said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha. Plastics are chemically inert substances and are per-se not harmful to the environment, except through indiscriminate littering of the plastic material along with other garbage and the absence of its organised segregation.



Bio-degradable plastic is still in its nascent state. Its development and usage in the developed countries also is limited, he said
