UK – recycling target doubled for Glastonbury 2005

The Glastonbury Festival, which takes place from Friday June 24 – Sunday June 26, 2005. plans to increase its recycling rate.



Last year the Festival saw more than 150 tonnes of on-site waste recycled – that‘‘s more than double the 2003 total of 60 tonnes. This year the Festival‘‘s organisers have been set the target of recycling 32 percent of waste collected on-site, double the 16 per cent target set in 2004.



As part of the recycling activity for 2005, the organisers are committing efforts to create a greener Glastonbury, including:



· 11,000 recycle drums placed in clusters around the site.

· On arrival at the Festival, recycling and waste bags will be issued. They are also

available at numerous points throughout the site.

· Donating 10 pence to WaterAid for every pint cup dropped into a recycling bin.

· Funding for recycling and litter picking staff on-site.

· Funding for an on-site signage campaign aimed at reducing the pollution in streams.



Last year the Glastonbury Festival, Budweiser and Network Recycling worked together to recycle:



· 10 tonnes of glass (confiscated on arrival.)

· 27 tonnes of cans and plastic.

· 13 tonnes of card.

· 100 tonnes of compostable waste (including paper cups and plates.)
