BOSTON – This week, the Mayor‘s office announced Boston‘s first-ever zero waste plan, which is exactly what it sounds like. This comes after an in-depth report from WBUR earlier this week where MA trash processors said they were close to facing a trash overflow crisis.

The very first large-scale industrial steam network at the Port of Antwerp, ECLUSE, is operational. On 15th March 2019, in the presence of around 200 invited guests, Flemish ministers Philippe Muyters and Lydia Peeters started the supply of steam over the network with a symbolic press of a button. ECLUSE will supply steam generated during waste incineration to five chemical companies at the port. That means these companies no longer have to generate the steam they need for their production processes in their own steam boilers, which will reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 100,000 tonnes a year.

An announcement by China, formerly a major importer of plastic waste, that it would be banning imports, has dramatically reduced options for disposing of it.

It is all a question of intensity. If I have a leisurely stroll around the park, spending an hour on the 2-mile loop looking at leaves and the lake, I will have brought peace to my soul but not burned enough calories to justify eating a pint of ice cream. If I had run a few laps around the same park during that hour, I might have missed a few of the trees but would have earned the right to relish the ice cream.

It is pretty easy to tell if you are healthy. You go to the doctor and they test your blood pressure, weight and every couple of years you get a blood panel. There are even tools to make sure you stay healthy. I recently read that if you eat well and not too much, stay active, don’t smoke and only drink in moderation you get 12 to 14 extra years. That suggests that if I continue (pretty much) following all five, I have a chance of lasting past 85.

Among various methods civic bodies across the State adopt for solid waste disposal, micro composting centres is the most common one as these can be decentralised. But, this method has run into stiff protests from the public.
