A California, US company is testing a prototype wsate processing system which cooks garbage at 140°C in a rotating steam autoclave. Unopened bags of rubbish are said to be transformed – paper products are pulped for cleaning re-use, while food waste generate methane gas. Labels are stripped from glass bottles, which are filtered out (along with plastics, steel and aluminium). According to US journal Waste News the process is being developed by Comprehensive Resources, Recovery &re-use Inc, who believe that a plant to serve 2.5 million people (processing around 5000 tons per day) would cost US$ 128 million
