UK consultation on landfill gas management

The EU Landfill Directive requires landfill gas to be collected and used where possible. It is important that emissions to air from landfill sites are managed and monitored to control gases and combustion products that potentially impact on health, the environment or amenity. A series of guidance documents have been produced to help the Environment Agency and waste industry to achieve a ‘step change’ in landfill gas management.

The guidance consists of an overarching document Guidance on the Management of Landfill Gas – which provides an update to Waste Management Paper 27 – is supported by a series of documents that concentrate on gaseous emissions from landfills. Three of these guidance documents are open for consultation in this round. The remainder will be dealt with in a separate consultation in the near future.

The Environment Agency is inviting comments on the following documents:

Guidance on the Management of Landfill Gas (1.7MB)

Guidance for monitoring trace components in landfill gas (0.8MB)

The other documents, which the Agency will release for external consultation in the near future, are:

Guidance for monitoring enclosed landfill gas flare

Guidance for monitoring landfill gas surface emission

Guidance on gas treatment technologies for landfill gas engines

Comments on all three documents are welcomed by February 15 2003.
