The world’s largest particle accelerator, CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, is now heating thousands of homes by channeling waste heat from its cooling system to the nearby French town of Ferney-Voltaire. Active since January, this innovative system uses heat exchanges to funnel thermal energy that would otherwise be wasted, eliminating the need for conventional heating and preventing thousands of tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
