From water to water: the Sungai Carafe uses glass waste to create wonderful ceramics

In Bali’s pristine waters lies a troubling paradox: the same rivers feeding lush rice terraces are choked with waste glass bottles drifting toward the ocean. The Sungai Carafe project transforms this environmental threat into elegant ceramic vessels, created through collaboration between designer Sara Howard, recycling organization Sungai Design, and local artisans at Kevala Ceramics. With over 26,300 kg of glass waste collected annually, this initiative embodies a full-circle approach that turns pollution into objects of beauty and ritual.
